How I Have Grown

I would say that the biggest thing I have learned this semester is independence.  In college, you don’t have your parents to help you and you have to make most of your decisions on your own.  Even though I have gained a sense of freedom from being away from home, I have also learned more responsibility, I am more organized, and I am more confident because I am on my own.

College has taught me a lot about myself so far.  I’ve learned how well I can manage stress and how to manage my time better.  Even though college is fun, I can’t do everything and join everything I want to-there has to be a balance. Overall, I’ve learned that picking Iowa State as my college was definitely the right choice because I love it here.

Hixson Award

I am so grateful the for the Hixson award.  This scholarship was a huge factor in whether or not I would have to attend a community college or not.  When I got the news that I was the new Des Moines County Hixson I was so happy because I knew my costs at Iowa State would not be so difficult.  I really need the financial aid because I was relying only on my own savings Also, due to a chosen major in education, I cannot afford to be in debt because of the low salary.  Receiving the Hixson award was such a huge financial burden lifted.

Not only was I happy because I could actually afford to come to Iowa State University, but getting picked to be the next scholar out of many applicants made me feel pretty good. I knew that I had opportunity that not many people got and I am very thankful.  I am so proud to call myself a 2011 Hixson Scholar.
